Avoiding Personal Finances

Millions of Britons are refusing to think about the state of their finances and choose to avoid having to deal with their personal finances.  Figures from Sainsbury’s Bank show that 2.8 million UK residents avoid thinking about their finances, which can then lead into bigger problems.

Those who deliberately avoid thinking about the state of their bank balance should stop avoiding it and stop putting off their financial management, as problems will arise if they don’t keep an eye on their finances.

For example, if an individual does not regularly monitor their statements they won’t be able to identify issues such as identity theft, or they may find that their bank is unfairly charging them or paying them a poor rate on their current account.  There are a dozen things that can be overlooked if you do not regularly check out your bank account.

The research from Sainsbury’s shows that one person in nine has left their bank account or credit card statements unopened at some point, and almost two million Britons refuse to talk about their finances with their partners because of the fear of how their partner will react.  One person in eleven has seen their relationship affected due to money fears.

This same lax attitude sees consumers accepting high rates of interest on car loans, credit cards and other forms of borrowing money. Instead of taking an interest in what rate they will be charged for credit, these consumers take the first deal that is offered, frequently over-paying by thousands.

Avoiding your finances can not only lead to debt or poverty, but it can also damage your personal relationships.  You should not ignore your finances and start getting into the habit of monitoring your bank statements.  If you find that you are put off by financial jargon, then contact your bank and get answers to your financial questions.  You will want to start taking control of your finances immediately, look at your expenditure, plan a budget and possibly seek advice on any financial issues that you may have.
