BT move ‘could help financially vulnerable’
Filed under: Debt Management @ March 26th, 2007Moves by BT to reduce its charges could help those with debt management difficulties, a financial expert has claimed.
According to chief executive of price comparison website SimplySwitch.com, Karen Darby, the decision to not charge £5 to change telecoms provider could help some of the most financially excluded groups in Britain.
She said: "Consumers looking to a find a better deal were set to be unfairly punished and in today’s competitive market a penalty for switching would be seen as grossly unfair.
"Scrapping the extra cost for barring outgoing calls from a landline will benefit the most vulnerable households, who are most likely to request the service."
The phone company has also decided against increasing the cost for barring outgoing phone calls from a landline from £11.50 to £17.50.
However, Ms Darby advised that as BT is still to charge those who pay their bills by cheque or cash an extra £14 over the course of a year, consumers should look for the most competitive supplier possible.
Earlier this month, Citizens Advice announced that government moves to promote financial exclusion can help consumers manage their finances and get a cheap personal loan.
