An Aluminum Carport is One Choice of Many

When you add an additional vehicle to your family you need to consider where to store it and/or how to protect it from the elements. For a seasonal use vehicle such as a boat, you could rent space at a store facility. The inconvenience of taking it and out of storage would be minimal as it is only used a few times per year. However, the easiest and most practical solution might be to build a carport or a garage.

If space allows, a carport or a garage can be added directly to your existing home using materials that match. When the new structure is finished it will appear to be an integral part of the original structure. If space does not permit an attached carport or garage, you could also build a standalone structure, set back from your home. There are pros and cons to having a new attached structure and having a standalone structure. It is easy to access the vehicle in an attached carport or garage.

The material with which you build the new structure will be a matter of personal taste and budget. Both carports and garages can be constructed with the same materials. There are lovely structures made from wood. Wooden carports are very common as are wooden standalone garages. Brick, stone and masonry can also be used for both structures but these materials tend to be more expensive. An easy way to do it yourself is to buy a metal kit. You can find many aluminum carport dealers online. Do a search and ask for references.

There are many different roof lines to choose from that would be suitable for either structure. These roof lines include gable, shed, flat and single slope. The most common roof line for an attached carport or garage is single slope. However, those considering an attached structure should always consider a flat roof as this allows for the potential of a second story.

The big difference between carports and garages is the security. Because garages have proper walls and a door they can be locked. Carports can never provide you with that type of security. Carports provide security from the sun and the rain but little else. Consider carefully the amount of security you desire before making your final decision.

Carports and garages have a lot of things in common. They can be constructed with the same materials, be attached or detached from an existing dwelling, and have similar roofing options. The big differences are cost and security. Once you have made a decision will find the cheapest way to construct either is with an aluminum carport or garage kit.
